Google's September 2026 Core Update

Google's latest core update expands AI citation signals and brings generative AI performance data to Search Console.

TL;DR

Google's September 2026 core update ties traditional ranking signals more closely to how often and how accurately your content appears as a source in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Generative AI performance data is now available in Search Console, giving you direct visibility into your AI-era citation footprint.

What changed in Google Search?

This is Google's third core algorithm update of 2026. Rather than introducing a wholesale new ranking system, the update refines how existing signals are weighted — with a new emphasis on factors that directly influence AI-era visibility:

  • Source credibility scoring — how often your domain is cited as a reliable reference across queries.
  • Content originality depth — not just first-handness of facts, but how comprehensively the original content addresses a topic relative to aggregated summaries.
  • Citation quality weighting — distinguishing high-authority primary sources from secondary aggregators.
  • Freshness alignment — rewarding sources that update content in step with how AI models refresh their understanding.

GEO implication

If your content has been well-cited in AI responses but wasn't ranking traditionally, this update may lift your visibility. Conversely, sites that relied on thin aggregation may see dips even if their traditional rankings held steady.

Generative AI performance reporting lands in Search Console

Alongside the core update, Google has begun rolling out a new Generative AI Performance report in Search Console. The report surfaces data such as:

  • How often your pages appear as cited sources in AI Overviews
  • How often your pages appear in AI Mode conversational answers
  • Citation click-through rates from AI answers to your site
  • The queries that triggered your content's inclusion as a source

This is the first time Google has provided direct, per-source data on how often your content is being cited in generative responses. Previously, this signal was inferred only through manual prompt tracking.

What website owners should do

Focus on the same fundamentals that have always mattered — but now consider how they map to AI citation behavior:

01

Audit your cited sources

Use the new Search Console report to identify which of your pages are already cited in AI answers. Double down on those content patterns.

02

Strengthen source attribution

Ensure author bios, publication dates, and original-source links are clearly present in your content — these are the signals AI models use to decide what to cite.

03

Track citation stability

Run the same prompts weekly and record when your site appears or disappears from answers. Volatility often signals indexing or freshness issues.
